The deaths of two models in their downtown Los Angeles apartments earlier this month are not believed to be connected, the Los Angeles Police Department said Tuesday.Nichole Coats, a 32-year-old found dead Sept. 10 in her South Grand Avenue apartment, and Maleesa Mooney, a 31-year-old found dead in her South Figueroa Street apartment on Sept. 12, were both models. Coats, who went by Nikki, was found amid a bloody scene in her home, while Mooney's killing is being treated as a homicide, police said. A suspect with alleged cartel ties was arrested and accused of smuggling 135 pounds of narcotics across the California border into Orange County.The suspect, who was not identified, is believed to be an associate of the Sinaloa drug cartel, according to the California Attorney General's Office.Authorities arrested the suspect in Santa Ana on Sept. 12 after discovering they had crossed the U.S.-Mexico border with a vehicle filled with hidden narcotics.While searching the suspect’s vehicle, authorities found “89 bundles of methamphetamines, totaling 135 pounds” inside a hidden compartment.X-ray photos of the vehicle show the bundles were lined up tightly together inside the car’s hidden compartment. PALO ALTO – A 24-year-old Redwood City man died in a hit-and-run crash early Sunday on Highway 101 in Palo Alto, authorities said.The collision, which involved four cars, happened around 1:15 a.m. in northbound lanes of the freeway at San Antonio Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.The CHP said the Redwood City man was traveling northbound in a 2011 Chevrolet Camaro when he was rear-ended by a 2019 Mazda CX-5. The Chevrolet was left disabled in the fast lane, where it was then hit by a 2019 Honda Accord and a 2019 Nissan Altima.The man was pronounced dead on the freeway. DUBLIN — At about 11:45 a.m. on Sept. 13, deputies at the Santa Rita Jail brought 33-year-old Bryson Levy to a new cell that was already occupied by Yuri Brand, an El Cerrito man on pretrial detention for allegedly living at a stranger’s unoccupied Piedmont home without permission for two days.Just 46 minutes later, Brand was found, dead, underneath a jail mattress and Levy, who stayed on top of Brand’s body until deputies ordered him to be handcuffed for removal from the cell, according to court records. Levy was re-arrested in the jail, and on Monday, Alameda County prosecutors formally charged him with one count of murder, though the exact cause of Brand’s death is unclear.There are no indications the two men knew one another, and the actual cell placement was routine, according to authorities. (KRON) -- A man was injured in a shooting in San Jose on Tuesday, the San Jose Police Department said. SJPD responded to the shooting at 12:48 p.m. near the intersection of Capitol Expressway and Monterey Road. The victim has at least one gunshot wound, Westbound traffic on Capitol Expressway will be impacted, SJPD said.
