MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Much of the typical team-switching stress for an NFL player will be irrelevant this week for Cam Akers. The fourth-year running back’s arrival with the Minnesota Vikings after being traded by the Los Angeles Rams was about as seamless of a schematic transition as he could find. Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell was his offensive coordinator during his first two seasons with the Rams.“A lot of the stuff carried over coming from L.A. I know 90% of the playbook coming in. Just getting to know the team, the coaches, the people — that’s probably the main learning curve for me right now,” Akers said after practice on Friday. “The pieces here, they’ve got the coaches, they’ve got the people. So hopefully I can step right in and contribute and do my part. The situation was pretty much perfect.”Getting a fresh start in a contract year once the season has already begun is an unusual scenario, but conflict between Akers and the Rams’ coach...Nationals pitcher Sean Doolittle announces his retirement after more than a decade in the majors

Dozens of members of the Swimming and Diving team at Boston College have hired lawyers after the college indefinitely suspended the program amid hazing allegations.BC announced Wednesday that the Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving program had been suspended indefinitely for hazing. BC officials released an additional statement Thursday in which they did step back on their initial report, now calling it “credible reports of hazing.”“Based on the information known at this time, Athletics has determined a program suspension is warranted, pending a full investigation by the University,” BC announced.Thirty families of the team hired lawyers, who said the hazing allegations have not been confirmed, and the school’s conduct office is only just beginning its investigation. The lawyer said they want BC to rescind their statement and allow the team to compete.“We believe that the issuance of this statement was premature, it was extremely irresponsible and negligent,” attorney Tara Da...UMass Memorial set to close maternity unit at HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital in Leominster

Community members are speaking out against UMass Memorial Health’s decision to close the inpatient maternity unit at HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital in Leominster and the city is filing a last-ditch lawsuit to stop it.The birthing center at the hospital is slated to close its doors this weekend.“Here we are, in an area with over 110,000 people, and this will be the only metropolitan or sub-metropolitan area in the country where this amount of people won’t be served by a maternity ward, it just doesn’t make any sense,” said Leominster Mayor Dean J. SAN DIEGO -- The SANDAG Board of Directors voted 15-4 Friday to approve a motion to remove a controversial "mileage tax" from any consideration for the 2025 Regional Plan.San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones led a protest before the board meeting. She was joined by other board members calling for the removal of the regional road user charge -- also known as the "mileage tax" -- from the plan.In December 2021, a regional plan was approved without the 4-cents-per-mile tax.
