What’s known so far about the deadly explosions in Iran At least 95 people were killed in Iran Wednesday after back-to-back explosions at an event commemorating the 2020 slaying of a prominent general by the United States, Iranian officials said. More than 210 people were wounded in the attack, for which there was no immediate claim of responsibility. Here’s what else is known — and what remains unclear — about the explosions: • Authorities initially said the twin bombings killed at least 103 people, but the death toll was later revised lower because some names had been counted twice. At least 211 were wounded, and dozens remained in critical condition, officials said.• The attack is the deadliest to strike Iran since its 1979 Islamic Revolution.• The second explosion occurred about 20 minutes after the first, which is often a technique used by militants to harm both civilians and emergency responders after an initial assault.• The attack came during commemorations for the fourth anniversary of the killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the he...

Trump appeals Colorado ballot ban to Supreme Court

Trump appeals Colorado ballot ban to Supreme Court Former President Trump on Wednesday asked the Supreme Court to overturn a Colorado court’s landmark ruling disqualifying him from the state’s 2024 Republican primary ballot under the 14th Amendment’s insurrection ban.The appeal likely sets up an extraordinary battle at the nation’s highest court, which has never ruled on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. That clause, added after the Civil War, blocks anyone who swore an oath to “support” the U.S. Constitution but “engaged in insurrection” against it from holding federal office. “The Colorado Supreme Court has no authority to deny President Trump access to the ballot,” Trump’s attorneys wrote in the petition. “By doing so, the Colorado Supreme Court has usurped Congressional authority and misinterpreted and misapplied the text of section 3.”Trump’s petition asks that the Supreme Court agree to take up the case and immediately reverse the Colorado ruling in a summary decision without oral argument or extensive briefing. The o...
