Timberwolves need Anthony Edwards to show patience against switching defenses

Timberwolves need Anthony Edwards to show patience against switching defenses Anthony Edwards has displayed the ability to adapt and react as defenses flash various looks in attempts to befuddle, or at least slow, him all season. Now, the Timberwolves guard has the next scheme he must master — switching.Minnesota’s past two opponents, Philadelphia and Brooklyn, have switched nearly every ball screen. Previously, opponents were often blitzing Edwards off of screens, sending two bodies at him. Edwards adjusted nicely, getting off the ball the moment the second defender came. That allowed his teammates to play offense essentially in a 4-on-3 situation and led to quality possessions. But with the switching, there is no easy key that triggers an automatic pass. Edwards is instead usually lined up against a slightly-lesser but still capable defender standing in front of him after the switch. The third-year guard seems to be interpreting that look as a signal to attack. He’s doing so early in shot clocks off Minnesota’s initial action, usually against...

Kerr: Warriors ‘hope’ Andrew Wiggins can return before end of season SAN FRANCISCO —  Andrew Wiggins has missed 11 games following his absence from the Warriors’ game against Milwaukee on Saturday due to personal reasons. There’s no timetable for Wiggins’ return, though head coach Steve Kerr said it’s the team’s “hope” that he will return sometime before the regular season ends.“There’s nothing to report on,” Kerr said before the game. “We’re giving him space, as we’ve talked about, as he deals with something that’s way more important than the game. If he’s able to come back then that would be great. If not, that’s the case. Whatever happens, we handle it accordingly.”Few details have been made public surrounding Wiggins’ extended absence except that he’s dealing with a family matter. The 28-year-old hasn’t played since a strong 29-point game against the Washington Wizards on Feb. 13, shortly before the All-Star break.Several m...

Chinese-brokered deal upends Middle East diplomacy and challenges U.S. WASHINGTON — Finally, there is a peace deal of sorts in the Middle East. Not between Israel and the Arabs, but between Saudi Arabia and Iran, which have been at each other’s throats for decades. And brokered not by the United States but by China. This is among the topsiest and turviest of developments anyone could have imagined, a shift that left heads spinning in capitals around the globe. Alliances and rivalries that have governed diplomacy for generations have, for the moment at least, been upended. The Americans, who have been the central actors in the Middle East for the past three-quarters of a century, almost always the ones in the room where it happened, now find themselves on the sidelines during a moment of significant change. The Chinese, who for years played only a secondary role in the region, have suddenly transformed themselves into the new power player. And the Israelis, who have been courting the Saudis against their mutual adversaries in Iran, now wonder where it lea...

Residents in Monterey County advised not to use tap water for drinking, cooking MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (BCN) -- Residents of Pajaro are advised not to use tap water for drinking and cooking until further notice, county officials said Saturday. Want to own a piece of the Golden Gate Bridge? Here’s how much it is selling for The wells for the Pajaro Sunny Mesa Water District were flooded during the recent storms and flood water may have entered into the well casing. The flood water may be contaminated with chemicals that would not be made safe by boiling or disinfection, so residents risk illness by using tap water for drinking or cooking, officials said. Instead, residents should use bottled water for all drinking including baby formula and juice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, making ice and food preparation until further notice. Boiling, freezing, filtering, adding chlorine or other disinfectants, or letting water stand will not make the water safe, officials said. Silicon Valley Bank Used Former McCarthy Staffers to Weaken Regulations, Lobby FDIC After successfully lobbying, for the rollback of new rules applied to Wall Street in the wake of the financial crisis, lobbyists for Silicon Valley Bank immediately began pressing their case further to  the federal authority that insures bank deposits in the event of another crisis, according to lobbying disclosures reviewed by The Intercept. The lobbying effort managed to exempted banks the size of SVB from more stringent regulations, including stress tests aimed at uncovering the type of weaknesses that led to the bank’s implosion last week. Two of the bank’s top lobbyists previously served as senior staffers for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who himself pushed for the repeal of significant pieces of the landmark Wall Street reform legislation known as Dodd-Frank.The meltdown of Silicon Valley Bank on Friday represents the second largest bank collapse in American history and the first since the 2008 financial crisis. Over 90 percent of SVB’s deposits exceed the amount federally gu...
