San Jose festival celebrates the art of letterpress printing

In a world of inkjet and laser printers, there are still plenty of people who appreciate the craftsmanship of a bookmark or a postcard printed on a manually operated letterpress. Jim Gard, chair of the San Jose Printers Guild, says there’s a very good reason for that: Hand-printed materials feel more real and like vinyl records and film photography are making a comeback with a new generation.“They’re objects you can pick up. The type is something you can put in your hand,” said Gard, chair of the San Jose Printers’ Guild, a group that’s been championing letterpress printing since 1992. “Contrast that to a computer, where it’s a never-ending stream of 1s and 0s. It’s doesn’t have that reality. It doesn’t have that physical presence.”An exterior view of the print shop at History Park in San Jose, Calif., on April 27, 2023. The softball field was the only place that made sense to Margaret Malaika Weaver. No offspeed pitch moved as much as letters on a page, which would float and dance around the paper as the East Bay student struggled through classroom assignments.Trapped within the confines of the school curriculum, she was a completely different person than the one who patrolled centerfield for the St. Mary’s-Berkeley softball team.Supremely confident with a bat and glove, she withdrew from the rest of her world everywhere else. The Weaver family was as confused as Margaret was dejected.“I knew they were trying to figure out what was going on with me, but it felt like no one was believing in me at that point,” she said. “Maybe that’s who I am. I’m just the slow, stupid friend.”A long-overdue screening proved Margaret was neither slow nor stupid. She was diagnosed with dyslexia in August 2021, just weeks before her junior year, and the discovery changed her life. Her bright personality is no longer limite...Antioch man arrested Thursday for 5th time this year

The driver, later identified as Matthew Quiroz, 36, of Antioch, briefly yielded at an intersection before taking off again, police said. Eventually, Quiroz ended up driving down a dead end. Police said it seemed like he was about to continue fleeing on foot but instead surrendered. 2 arrested in shooting outside of San Pablo business caught on video A further investigation revealed the car Quiroz was driving was reported stolen earlier that day from Martinez. DENVER (AP) — At times, the Denver Nuggets were easy – sometimes, too easy – to love, with their rainbow uniforms, their rumpled grumposaurus of a coach and a defense-optional game plan that kept the scoreboard clicking into the 120s and 130s night after night. At other times, loving them was more difficult, say, during those 50, 60 and 70-loss seasons in the ’90s that installed a revolving door on the coach’s office, or even during a decade-long resurgence in the 2000s when they were led by a fickle superstar who ultimately bailed for New York City. And even now, with the Nuggets the top seed in the Western Conference, Denver has yet to be mistaken for much beyond an NBA novelty. Such is life in a league driven by superstars who are on a first-name basis with fans — Magic, Michael, LeBron and Steph — but never by a team that doesn't win titles, doesn't even play for them, and doesn't get much love even when the two-maybe-three-time MVP is on its roster. The movement from West to East is due to our steering flow in the upper levels out of the West-Southwest. A few of the storms could become strong to severe in nature producing heavy rain at times, gusty winds, small-size hail, frequent lightning, and a brief tornado. Over the weekend, Saturday will be steamy as well with just a few spotty afternoon storms. However, Sunday will be by windy and storms a weak front approaches producing a line of storms. Models are indicating that we will have more coverage of showers and storms with isolated severe weather possible. Early next week promises to remain hot and dry, but with lower humidity.
