Judge: Virginia teacher shot by 6-year-old student can continue $40M lawsuit By Ben Finley | Associated PressNEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A teacher who was shot by her 6-year-old student in Virginia can press forward with her $40 million against a school system over claims of negligence by school administrators, a judge ruled Friday. The surprise decision by Newport News Circuit Court Judge Matthew Hoffman means that Abby Zwerner could get much more than just workers compensation for the serious injuries caused by January’s classroom shooting.Lawyers for Newport News Public Schools had tried to block the lawsuit, arguing that Zwerner was eligible only for workers compensation. It provides up to nearly 10 years pay and lifetime medical care for injuries.Hoffman disagreed with the school board, concluding that Zwerner’s injuries “did not arise out of her employment” and therefore did not “fall within the exclusive provisions of workers’ compensation coverage.”The judge wrote: “The danger of being shot by a student is not one that is peculiar or unique to the...

Sign up to get the next one in your inbox.Until last week, Miguel Sanchez was both a member of the Providence City Council and a constituent service representative for Democratic Gov. Daniel McKee. He is now only one of those two things; McKee fired Sanchez for his public opposition to the war in Gaza and his support for a ceasefire. Sanchez had introduced a resolution to City Council, which passed unanimously, condemning “terrorism and ethnic cleansing.” On Thursday night, the City Council passed another resolution, this one explicitly calling for a ceasefire, becoming the first city council to advocate for one — or at least one of the first. (Fact-check me on that if your city council has passed one; it looks like Richmond, California, sort of...

They’ll kill their enemies, raise their arms in simian triumph, and that’s the end of the story. In reality, committing violence is like kicking a football covered in razors into history, where it lunges around, bouncing this way and that, slicing open random people across the world in a trajectory so complex that no human being can predict it.This is frightening to think about, especially because there are thousands of these footballs caroming around the globe at any one time, occasionally smashing into each other and each then spiraling off in even more erratic directions. But there’s good news. No. 3 Boilermakers using historic NCAA Tournament exit as motivation in 2023-2024 Purdue coach Matt Painter could have spent this past offseason shrugging off another stunning NCAA Tournament exit,Instead, he and the Boilermakers owned it.From the moment Painter and Virginia coach Tony Bennett traded postgame text messages, Painter and the third-ranked Boilermakers knew the endless questions about their historic first-round loss to 16th-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson would follow them wherever they went. So they only had option: Follow Bennett’s lead and turn a humbling loss into motivation for a championship run.“You don’t run from things. You always face things,” Painter said when practice opened in September. “I think when you face things, it’s harder. But that’s what kind of brings the demons out and really helps you because now you have a little bit more drive, you’re a little more focused.”Purdue’s remarkable 2022-2023 season started as the ride of a lifetime.Three straight wins helped the Boilermakers go from unr...

Packers relying on inexperienced cornerbacks to step up after Douglas’ departure GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay Packers rookie cornerback Carrington Valentine often looked to veteran Rasul Douglas for advice as the seventh-round draft pick from Kentucky attempted to make a successful transition to the NFL.Valentine now has the biggest opportunity of his young career but no longer has Douglas around to guide him.The trade of Douglas to the Buffalo Bills this week while 2021 first-round draft pick Eric Stokes remains on injured reserve leaves the Packers depending on some inexperienced cornerbacks such as Valentine and Corey Ballentine to work alongside Jaire Alexander and Keisean Nixon.“Rasul was a mentor to me,” Valentine said. “I sat next to him every day. I’m sad to see him go. I learned a lot from him. I appreciate everything. He didn’t have to do that. But with the opportunity, just got to make the most of it.”Green Bay’s cornerback issues come at an inconvenient time. The Packers (2-5) have lost four straight and face the exceptional receiving tandem of Co...

‘Free Solo’ filmmakers dive into narrative with thrilling swim drama ‘Nyad’ Filmmakers Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin have given audiences thrilling and sometimes terrifying front-row seats to incredible feats of human ambition in their documentary work. From Alex Honnold’s white-knuckle climb up Yosemite’s El Capitan in the Oscar-winning “ Free Solo ” to the claustrophobic blackness awaiting the cave divers who rescued the trapped soccer team in Northern Thailand in “ The Rescue,” their understanding of the personalities capable of such impossible accomplishments is almost unparalleled in filmed storytelling. It is not surprising, then, that they’d be interested and uniquely equipped to tell the story of Diana Nyad and her treacherous 110-mile (177-kilometer) swim from Cuba to Key West at age 64 for their first narrative film, “ Nyad,” now available to watch on Netflix. But there would be at least one big difference in bringing “Nyad” to life: actors.“In nonfiction, you observe. You’re like the closest listener,” Vasarhelyi told The Associated Pres...
