Review: $80 interactive robot Dog-E delivers tail-wagging fun The concept of a robot dog has been around for many years, but usually, they’ve been too expensive, too complicated, or both. Now, one toy company thinks they have the answer with a one-of-a-kind dog at an affordable price point. It's called the Dog-E by WowWee, and it's inspired by those popular blind boxes, where kids love the surprise of not knowing what they're getting."When you turn him on, this is when the magic really starts," said Sydney Wiseman, Dog-E's creator. She has high hopes for the robotic pup this holiday season."Honestly, I think I love toys more than kids," she quipped. Wiseman comes from a family of toy makers and one of her earliest inventions, called Fingerlings, was a massive hit."I think we really achieved in creating a character and a movie on your finger at a $14.99 price point, and no one had ever seen anything like that before," explained Wiseman. Video: Humpback whales entertain Southern California tourists Passengers aboard an Orange County whale-watching tour had a once-in-a-lifetime encounter with two humpback whales last week as they appeared to be "playing" around their boat.On Sunday, the majestic creatures spent nearly three hours cheerfully entertaining a Newport Coastal Adventure vessel, swimming up and around the small Zodiac while putting on an incredible display. ‘Aggressive shark activity’ prompts closure of beach in Orange County According to Captain Delaney Trowbridge, the humpbacks were seen doing pectoral fin slaps, which is a movement when a whale raises its fin into the air before slamming it back into the water, and tail throwing - a similar movement that is done with the tail. They were also seen rolling around in the water and peeking their heads above the surface in a movement called "sky hopping." Harry and Meghan’s biographer takes aim at ‘power-hungry’ William, ‘unpopular’ Charles Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have publicly retreated from attacking the British royal family after apparently realizing that the British and American public have become tired of hearing them “whinge,” as the English say. But the California-based Duke and Duchess of Sussex still have their proxies putting forth the idea that they were badly mistreated by the monarchy and that only their star power could have helped an antiquated institution stay relevant in the 21st century. One of those proxies has long been biographer Omid Scobie. Described as the Sussexes’ “mouthpiece,” and even as Meghan’s “lapdog,” the royal author has ramped up promotion for what he promises is a scathing new book about the royal family, which will offer an “explosive” and “penetrative investigation into the current state of the British monarchy,” The Telegraph reported. The description for Scobie’s “Endgame” brands Charle...

San Jose retail center could be replaced by affordable housing project SAN JOSE — An affordable housing development with well over 100 units is being eyed on a San Jose site now occupied by a small retail strip center, a fresh example of a fast-shifting real estate landscape in the Bay Area. The proposed development would be located at 1190 Hillsdale Avenue in San Jose, the site of a retail center next to Almaden Expressway. The proposed development would consist of 160 apartments, according to a proposal on file with the San Jose Planning Department. The residences in the project are described as “affordable multifamily units,” according to very preliminary plans on file at City Hall.As prospects for office buildings and retail centers become murkier in a wobbly economy, real estate firms have increasingly turned to housing as a more fundamentally solid development option. It wasn’t immediately clear which real estate development company had proposed the project.  An architectural firm filed the proposal. What is clear, according to...

Jaguars and pass rusher Josh Allen have a starting point for pending contract negotiations JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars and pass rusher Josh Allen have a starting point for contract negotiations. With Montez Sweat signing a four-year, $98 million extension with the Chicago Bears last week, that deal should provide a baseline — maybe even a blueprint — for Allen and the Jaguars moving forward.Allen ranks fifth in the NFL with nine sacks through eight games, putting up career numbers in a contract year. He’s been one of the many bright spots for the streaking Jaguars (6-2) through the first half of the season.Although some would argue that making Allen one of the NFL’s highest-paid edge rushers is risky considering he had 17 sacks over his previous three seasons, Jacksonville can’t afford to let him go.Not only has Allen been the team’s top defender in back-to-back years, signing draft picks to second contracts has been one of the small-market franchise’s biggest front-office failures over the past decade.Only 10 of the 76 draft picks betwee...
