Rockies Mailbag: An update on Daniel Bard’s anxiety; the fifth starter mess Denver Post sports writer Patrick Saunders with the latest installment of his Rockies Mailbag.Pose a Rockies — or MLB — related question for the Rockies Mailbag.Any word on how Daniel Bard is doing, Patrick? He’s been such a nice feel-good story over the past few years. I’d hate to see him struggle mentally again.— Mark, ArvadaMark, I talked to Bard in San Diego, both on and off the record. I told him that I have had my own battles with anxiety for many years and we chatted about that. He’s such a good person and he’s very self-aware, which can be a blessing and a curse, but I believe he’s going to figure it out. He’s been through this before and he has an understanding of what he’s dealing with. I think he’ll be the Rockies’ closer again this season, though it might take some time for him to get there.Patrick, I like to remain optimistic about baseball, because after all, “anything can happen.” Howev...

Nuggets coach Michael Malone: We’ll be out in the first round if we play like that HOUSTON – Jeff Green and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope couldn’t bear to watch the last painful seconds of Tuesday’s abomination against the Rockets. They began walking off the court toward the visiting locker room about 10 seconds before the final buzzer sounded on Houston’s triumphant 124-103 win over Denver.Needing only a win to clinch the first-ever No. 1 seed in Nuggets history, Denver didn’t take the challenge seriously or overlooked the nature of their opponent. Either should be damning at this stage of the season.“We came in thinking this game was going to be easy,” Caldwell-Pope told The Denver Post. “… We didn’t take full advantage of it.”The Nuggets began Tuesday morning walking through the Rockets’ tendencies in a hotel ballroom. They were reminded, incessantly, that the plucky Rockets crash the glass hard. They were also reminded that the Nuggets could circumvent the drama, avoid any help from Memphis, and crown themselves the top seed in the West with a win in Houston.Neither...

Krugman: Why people in GOP-leaning states have shorter life expectancies

Krugman: Why people in GOP-leaning states have shorter life expectancies Last Friday the Medicare trustees released their latest report on the system’s finances, and it contained some unexpected good news: Expenditures are running below projections, and the Hospital Insurance Trust Fund won’t be exhausted as soon as previously predicted. But one important reason for this financial improvement was grisly: COVID-19 killed a substantial number of Medicare beneficiaries. And the victims were disproportionately seniors already suffering from severe — and expensive — health problems. “As a result, the surviving population had spending that was lower than average.”America’s dismal COVID performance was part of a larger story. I don’t know how many Americans are aware that over the past four decades, our life expectancy has been lagging ever further than that of other advanced nations — even nations whose economic performance has been poor by conventional measures. Italy, for example, has experienced a generation of economic stagnation, with basically no growth i...

Opinion: As mass shootings multiply, judges are erasing gun safety laws Once again a mass shooting is in the headlines — this time in Nashville, with three children among the six victims. This latest horrific tragedy is prompting renewed calls for gun reform, but what most Americans don’t know is that a different kind of gun revolution is already underway.Over the past few months, the federal courts have waged an unprecedented attack on U.S. gun safety laws. Spurred by the Supreme Court, judges have declared dozens of mainstream, widely accepted restrictions on firearms unconstitutional.Even a partial list of the laws struck down or enjoined is startling: bans on possession of firearms by domestic abusers; bans on guns in churches, hospitals and bars; prohibitions on firearms in the hands of people charged with felonies; restrictions on 18-to-20-year-olds carrying weapons; prohibitions on loaded guns in vehicles; and bans on guns with obliterated serial numbers. This tidal wave of rulings began with a decision by the Supreme Court last year. The justices...
