Financial problems, lack of workers forces some Missouri birthing units to close JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Within the past decade, seven birthing units have closed at hospitals across the state, leaving an impact on Missourians, especially in rural areas.Since 2014, roughly 20 Missouri hospitals have closed, leaving 50 rural counties without a hospital. Nearly all of those closures are because of financial problems or a lack of workers. It's the same reasons why hospitals are shutting down labor and delivery units."It has been something that has been happening for over the last decade or more," Dave Dillon, Missouri Hospital Association (MHA) communications director, said.Closing the doors of a maternity ward impacts more than just the birth. It affects both prenatal and postpartum care."It's not that people don't have a place to give birth; it's that they also aren't getting all that care around birth, too," Julia Interrante, statistical lead at the University of Minnesota Rural Research Center, said. "Some people leave rural areas that are that reproductive age. D...

Broncos S Kareem Jackson’s four-game suspension upheld on appeal, eligible to return before Christmas Eve game vs. Patriots Kareem Jackson is getting no grace this time. The Broncos veteran safety had his four-game suspension for a high hit on Minnesota quarterback Josh Dobbs in Sunday’s win over the Vikings upheld through the appeals process Tuesday, the NFL announced. The appeal was heard by former NFL linebacker Derrick Brooks, one of two officers jointly approved by the NFL and the NFL Players Association to handle such matters.Denver head coach Sean Payton said he took part in Jackson’s first, successful appeal last month on Jackson’s behalf and said it lasted about an hour via Zoom. In that instance, the original four-game suspension for a hit on Green Bay tight end Luke Musgrave was cut to two. But on Tuesday, Jackson received no such reprieve.Perhaps particularly stinging this time around for Jackson is that the Broncos have the longest active winning streak in the NFL at four games and are coming up on a critical juncture against a set of AFC foes also vying for playoff positioni...

Keeler: Deion Sanders says CU Buffs won’t “buy” superstar recruits? Then Coach Prime better buy a superstar offensive line coach. Now. BOULDER — Shedeur Sanders may be a Rolls-Royce quarterback. But he ain’t going anywhere for the Buffs until CU lands him an Oldsmobile.“I’m bringing in an old Oldsmobile in the summer. And they’re going to be pushing that thing up and around the field … I’ve done it before, because it does teach you to drive that knee through the defender. So whatever I’ve got to do, I’ll do it.”So said our old pal Chris Kapilovic, five springs ago. Remember Coach Kap? Mel Tucker Era. Blink and you missed him. And, oh, how the Buffs have missed him.Kap, Tucker’s offensive line coach, told amazing stories. He had his players push an ancient Oldsmobile around during workouts. He’s reportedly making $1.08 million this fall at Michigan State, where the program just happens to be in the middle of a regime change after Tucker’s icky off-field exploits came to light.Kapilovic’s contemporary at CU, Bill O’Boyle, is making $300,000. Harvard Law Review Editors Vote to Kill Article About Genocide in Gaza A week after Hamas’s October 7 massacre, by which time Israel’s all-out assault on Palestinians in the Gaza Strip had killed thousands of civilians, the online editors of the prestigious Harvard Law Review reached out to Rabea Eghbariah. The two online chairs, as they are called, had decided to solicit an essay from a Palestinian scholar for the journal’s website. Eghbariah was an obvious choice: A Palestinian doctoral candidate at Harvard Law School and human rights lawyer, he has tried landmark Palestinian civil rights cases before the Israeli Supreme Court.Eghbariah submitted a draft of a 2,000-word essay by early November. He argued that Israel’s assault on Gaza should be evaluated within and beyond the “legal framework” of “genocide.”In line with the Law Review’s standard procedures, the piece was solicited, commissioned, contracted, submitted, edited, fact checked, copy edited, and approved by the relevant editors. Yet it will never be published with the Harvard Law Review.Fol...
